其實呢，澳洲在18世紀被當作英國的「罪犯流放地」，現在美麗的伯塔尼灣(Botany Bay)在當年可是被當作非常嚴重犯罪者的流放地呢！
澳洲國慶日要紀念的，就是帶領700名流放犯的抵達澳洲的阿瑟·菲利普(Arthur Phillip)船長，他在1788年1月26日抵達雪梨灣(Sydney Cove)，並升起了英國國旗，後人便把這一天訂為澳洲的國慶日囉。
